FOR THE LOVE OF WILDLIFE
At Wrendale Wildlife Studio in Healesville in Victoria’s Yarra Valley – Australian artist Denise Smith creates oil, acrylic, watercolour and pastel artworks featuring Australian and international wildlife. Her focus on birds, animals and landscapes reflects her long-standing passion for wildlife and her fears that many will be lost through environmental damage.
Talented at drawing from an early age, Denise picked up a paintbrush in 1985 under the tutelage of Malcolm Cameron at the Mitcham Arts Association and never looked back. She went on to be taught by Janette George-Shambrook who shared her appetite for technique and colour exploration and who became both mentor and friend.
Building an art studio at her home has enabled Denise to paint more frequently and experiment with other mediums. Her work now extends to commissions for private individuals, local tourism businesses, and pet portraits. She also creates and sells one of a kind cards, invitations and jewellery
In the late 1990’s Denise and her husband moved to Healesville in the Yarra Valley, seeking a ‘tree-change’. The broad and diverse local artistic community has an annual Yarra Valley Open Studio weekend where selected local artists open their studios to the public for the weekend.
As well as being a regular participant in the Open Studios programme, Denise also opens her own ‘Wrendale Wildlife Studio’ to the public most days. She loves welcoming a broad range of local and international guests to her studio to share her work.
Believing that ‘you never stop learning’ Denise continues to attend workshops by a number of her contemporaries and runs classes herself at her studios on Fridays in acrylic, pastel and beginner’s watercolour.
To contact Denise, call her at her studio on 03 5962 3950 or on her mobile on 0408 351 700 or email her via the contact form.
